What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)? Role, Skills & Pay in India

Key takeaways
  • A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with a customer to make a product succeed in that customer's real environment, then owns the outcome.
  • The role started at Palantir; AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have made it one of the fastest-growing engineering roles.
  • Glassdoor India showed roughly 500 FDE listings in October 2026, with Bengaluru the biggest hub.
  • Employer-posted FDE pay in India ranges from about ₹5 LPA at IT services firms to ₹90 LPA at funded AI startups.

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly inside a customer’s world — their data, their systems, their constraints — to make a product actually work there. Where most engineers build features for thousands of users, an FDE makes one customer successful at a time, and is judged on whether that customer gets real results.

If you are a backend, data, cloud or solutions engineer in India wondering whether this role suits you, this guide covers what FDEs do, why demand has exploded, how the role differs from a regular software job, and what it pays here.

Where the FDE role came from

The role began at Palantir roughly two decades ago, where these engineers were nicknamed “Deltas”. Palantir’s government and intelligence customers could not simply try software over a video call — even a demo could take weeks of security approvals — so the company sent engineers to sit with customers and build alongside them. For years Palantir employed more of these customer-embedded engineers than conventional software engineers.

Why AI companies are hiring FDEs now

AI turned a niche Palantir job into one of the hottest titles in tech. The reason is simple: a model that looks brilliant in a demo often stalls once it meets a large company’s messy data, legacy systems and compliance rules. An MIT study cited by The New Stack found that the vast majority of enterprise AI pilots produced little or no measurable profit impact.

FDEs close that gap. They get access to sensitive customer data, wire the AI system into real workflows, take it to production and keep tuning it as real usage exposes problems. Big AI deals are large enough that vendors can afford to put engineers on a customer for months.

That is why the title now appears at OpenAI (which set up its FDE team in 2024), Anthropic (expanding its Applied AI group), Cohere, Databricks and many AI startups. Job postings have grown fast: The New Stack reported FDE postings rising more than 800% between January and September 2025, and Indeed data compiled by fde.directory showed global postings climbing from 643 in April 2025 to 5,330 in April 2026.

What an FDE does day to day

The work typically moves through four loops:

  1. Discover. Sit with the customer’s teams to understand their workflows, data sources, systems and what “success” means for them.
  2. Build. Write integrations, data pipelines, APIs, evaluation suites, light front-ends and configuration — whatever the deployment needs.
  3. Deploy and debug. Take it to production inside the customer’s environment, and debug systems you did not design (authentication, networks, data quality, legacy services).
  4. Feed back. Turn what you learned in the field into input for the core product and research teams, so the next customer is easier.

In AI companies, a large part of this is building evals — tests that measure whether the model is doing the customer’s task well — and iterating until it does.

FDE vs software engineer vs solutions engineer

Forward Deployed Engineer Software Engineer Solutions / Sales Engineer
Main goal Make one customer successful in production Build and scale the core product Help win the deal with demos and technical answers
Writes production code? Yes, a lot Yes Some — mostly demos and proofs of concept
Customer contact Daily, direct Mostly indirect High, mostly pre-sale
Technical scope Broad: integrations, data, deployment, some front-end Deep in one area Broad but lighter
Judged on Customer outcome Product quality and delivery Revenue and technical win rate

At some companies the line blurs, and FDEs act partly as technical consultants. The core difference holds: an FDE ships working software into a customer’s real environment and owns the result.

Skills companies look for

Based on how employers describe the role, the recurring skills are:

  • Strong coding, usually Python plus one backend language, with solid API and data handling.
  • Cloud and integration skills: AWS, Azure or GCP, containers, authentication, and connecting systems that were never designed to talk to each other.
  • Debugging unfamiliar systems under real-world pressure.
  • Turning vague requests into a scoped plan the customer agrees to.
  • Clear communication — explaining technical trade-offs and risks to non-technical stakeholders.
  • For AI roles: working with LLM APIs, retrieval (RAG), prompt design and evaluations.
  • Ownership and comfort with ambiguity — caring whether the solution delivers value, not just whether the code is clean.

We break each of these down, with how to build them, in our upcoming guide to the FDE skill set.

FDE hiring in India right now

India’s FDE market has grown quickly. In October 2026, Glassdoor India listed roughly 500 FDE openings, with Bengaluru alone accounting for about 170. These are broad-match counts, so treat them as a direction rather than a precise number.

The employers fall into four groups, according to fde.directory’s review of listings:

  • Global AI startups hiring in India, such as Cartesia and Blitzy.
  • Global platforms with India capability centres (GCCs), such as Databricks and Google Cloud.
  • Consulting and IT services, including McKinsey QuantumBlack, BCG X, EY, Accenture and Wipro.
  • Indian product companies, such as Meesho for voicebot deployments.

How much do FDEs earn in India?

Pay varies more than in almost any other engineering role, because “FDE” covers very different jobs:

  • Funded AI startups: about ₹25–90 LPA in employer-posted listings, with founding FDE roles at the top.
  • Global platform GCCs: about ₹22–55 LPA.
  • Consulting and IT services: about ₹5–30 LPA and above.

Levels.fyi’s self-reported data put the India median at about ₹17.6 LPA in October 2026, though that rests on a small sample. The spread mostly reflects ownership: top-paying roles own the customer outcome end to end, while services roles typically deliver against a client’s statement of work.

Is the FDE role right for you?

You will probably enjoy the role if you:

  • like building things that real users rely on, quickly;
  • are comfortable talking to customers and stakeholders, not just engineers;
  • enjoy variety — new systems, new industries, new problems;
  • are fine with ambiguity, travel or on-site work.

It may frustrate you if you prefer deep, long-running work on one codebase with few interruptions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Forward Deployed Engineer a sales role?

No. An FDE is an engineer who writes production code. The role is customer-facing and often works alongside sales, but the FDE's job is to build, integrate and deploy, and to own whether the solution works for the customer.

How much does a Forward Deployed Engineer earn in India?

It depends heavily on the employer. Employer-posted ranges in 2026 run from about ₹5–30 LPA at consulting and IT services firms, ₹22–55 LPA at global platform companies' India centres, and ₹25–90 LPA at funded AI startups. Levels.fyi's small self-reported sample put the India median near ₹17.6 LPA in October 2026.

Can a fresher become a Forward Deployed Engineer?

It is uncommon. Most FDE listings ask for several years of engineering or customer-facing technical experience, because the job involves owning messy, real-world deployments. Freshers usually build towards it through software, solutions or implementation engineering roles.

Which cities in India hire the most FDEs?

Bengaluru has by far the largest share of listings — about 170 of roughly 500 on Glassdoor India in October 2026. Mumbai, Gurgaon and Chennai also appear in employer listings, alongside remote roles with global startups.
